Plain answers, reviewed by clinicians

Resources for families

These guides answer the practical questions families ask us most: how to choose a hospice and check it is legitimate, how to change providers, what the first week looks like, how hospice works in assisted living, what Medi-Cal covers, and which California forms put your wishes in writing. Each guide is reviewed by a clinician and lists its sources. Start anywhere.

How to use these guides

The guides are organized by topic, not by date. Each one stands alone, so you can read only what you need today. Several include a list of questions you can print and take to a meeting with any hospice, facility or health plan.

The guides give general information. They are not medical or legal advice, and they cannot tell you whether a person is eligible for hospice. For the basics, start with hospice care, is it time for hospice? and paying for care. For illness-specific guides, see hospice care by condition.

How we write and review this site

You do not have to decide alone.

Call (909) 347-7000 any time, or leave your number and someone from Beta's hospice team will call you. No decision is needed to call. Most families start with a question.

Only a hospice doctor, together with the person’s own doctor, can confirm hospice eligibility. A website cannot.

  • A nurse answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • You can stop hospice at any time
  • You have the right to choose your hospice

If this is an emergency, call 911.

Fields marked with a star are required.

Please do not include medical details here. We will ask by phone. This form does not enroll anyone in hospice. Choosing hospice is always the patient's decision.
