How many hospices are in each county?
Two public lists, kept by two agencies. Medicare counts hospices it has certified. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) counts hospices with an active state licence.
| County | Medicare-certified hospices | Certified in 2019 or later | Active state hospice licences |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Bernardino | 153 | 80 | 149 |
| Riverside | 67 | 38 | 78 |
| Los Angeles | 1,160 | 883 | 1,127 |
| Orange | 139 | 77 | 127 |
| Ventura | 69 | 34 | 66 |
| All of California | 1,913 | 1,268 | 1,896 |
The two lists come from different agencies on different dates, so they do not match one for one. How we counted is below.
What do the numbers show?
A little more than half of San Bernardino County's Medicare-certified hospices, 80 of 153, were certified in 2019 or later. In Los Angeles County the share is about three in four, 883 of 1,160.
Many state licences began just before California paused new ones. SB 664 stopped new hospice licences from January 1, 2022, except where the state finds a need based on how many hospices already serve the area, and AB 177 extended the pause to January 1, 2027. In San Bernardino County, 46 of the 149 active licences show a first licence date in 2021, and none shows a date in 2022 or later. Across California, 850 of 1,896 show 2021.
A hospice needs a state licence first, and Medicare certifies it later, after a survey. That is why the Medicare file shows hospices certified in 2022 and later.
Who owns them?
Ownership type as each hospice reported it to Medicare. Many records leave the field blank.
| County | For-profit | Non-profit | Other or government | Not listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Bernardino | 107 | 4 | 0 | 42 |
| Riverside | 48 | 1 | 2 | 16 |
| Los Angeles | 615 | 1 | 8 | 536 |
| Orange | 86 | 4 | 4 | 45 |
| Ventura | 46 | 3 | 0 | 20 |
| All of California | 1,096 | 53 | 39 | 725 |
Beta Hospice is one of the 153 in San Bernardino County and lists for-profit ownership.
Why do the two counts differ?
Medicare and the state count different things on different dates. The Medicare file lists each hospice by its Medicare provider number (CCN). The state file lists each hospice licence, including hospices that are licensed but not yet certified by Medicare. Some hospices appear under a slightly different name or address in each.
If the two records for the hospice you are considering disagree, ask the hospice why. There can be an innocent reason, such as a recent move, but you should get a clear answer. The steps are on how to verify a hospice.
What does this mean when you choose a hospice?
A long list tells you that you have a choice. It does not tell you which hospice is right. No count says anything about any one hospice, good or bad.
Check the hospice you are considering in Medicare Care Compare and in CDPH Cal Health Find, and ask for its five identifiers. The two-minute check links both records for any California hospice. The red flags and the cases prosecuted in California are on hospice fraud in California. Our own record is the same as anyone's to check: CCN A11527, California licence 550004949, certified by Medicare in 2020. Every identifier is on the licences page.
How we counted
- Medicare: the CMS Provider Data Catalog file Hospice - General Information (dataset yc9t-dgbk), updated August 19, 2026. One row is one hospice with a Medicare provider number (CCN). We counted rows by the county in the file, and used the year of the certification date.
- State: the CDPH Licensed and Certified Healthcare Facility Listing on the California Health and Human Services Open Data Portal, data date October 16, 2026. We kept facility type hospice with an active licence and counted each licence number once per county. The first licence date is the initial licence date as the state file gives it.
- Ownership is as listed in the Medicare file. Not listed means the field is blank.
- We downloaded both files on October 22, 2026. We did not remove, merge, rank or judge any hospice. The full lists, with every hospice's name, are on the CMS and CDPH sites linked in the sources.

Hospice counts for every California county (CSV) has both counts, the certification and first-licence years, and ownership type, one row per county and a statewide row. Counties with no hospice in either file are not listed. You may reuse it with credit to Beta Hospice and to the two sources, CMS and CDPH.
Common questions about hospice numbers
How many hospices are in San Bernardino County?
153 Medicare-certified hospices in the CMS file updated August 19, 2026, and 149 active state hospice licences in the CDPH file dated October 16, 2026.
How many hospices are in Riverside County?
67 Medicare-certified hospices in the CMS file updated August 19, 2026, and 78 active state hospice licences in the CDPH file dated October 16, 2026.
How many hospices are in California?

Is California issuing new hospice licences?
Rarely. Under SB 664, the state stopped issuing new hospice licences on January 1, 2022, except where it finds a need based on how many hospices already serve the area, and AB 177 extended the pause to January 1, 2027. The state file shows 27 active licences across California with a first licence date in 2022 or later, none of them in San Bernardino County.
Does a county with more hospices have more fraud?
A count cannot tell you that. Check the hospice you are considering in public records, whatever county it is in. See how to verify a hospice.
