Sometimes people go through challenging moments when faced with a critical illness in a family or among relatives. In some circumstances, the individual suffering from terminal conditions needs special assistance to enhance their quality of life. They may be dealing with a critical condition that has progressed to the terminal stage and the patient is close to dying.
These are two different cases and that is perhaps the most important distinction between Hospice and Palliative care.

What is Palliative Care?

Palliative care is mostly aimed at improving the quality of life of any person who has an incurable, severe, or long-term illness. It is distinct from hospice care that is offered when a person is in the last months of the terminal illness, that is, in the final life stages. Palliative care may be given at the same time as cure-oriented treatments or may be given if curative efforts have not been successful or if a patient or family wants help in dealing with a terminal illness. In other words, it is offered to people experiencing diseases regardless of the disease’s stage. The overall purpose is to alleviate symptoms, minimize pain, and offer comfort or counseling for patients and their families.

What is Hospice Care?

Hospice care is another form of care delivery focusing on someone who has been diagnosed of a terminal illness and estimated to survive for a given number of months (ideally, this is used to determine the eligibility for receiving hospice). Generally, hospice is launched when the main objective of care is no longer going to be an attempt to cure the condition but rather to ease the process of dying. This frequently arises out of a patient’s choice not to seek curative or life-prolonging treatment but rather to have ‘comfort-oriented care,’ or even ‘palliative care’ – which means the ability to keep the patient as comfortable and free from pain and distress as possible – for as long as possible.
